Brick Moon

This is a new story I am working on.  It’s called Brick Moon.  It’s set in an imaginary time, about 1500 AD. I’m writing it as I draw. The main characters are monks. They are calligraphers and letter setters who work in a letterpress printing workshop.   Brick Moonn

This first image is based on a Japanese manga by Hideko Mizuno, “Gin no habira” (Silver Petals) 1960. Manga never ever fails to inspire me. For example, I found this fascinating article about the history of early “shojo manga” – Japanese comics made mainly for and by girls/women.

I became immensely interested in letterpress printing after having done a course myself at the Special Collections in the University of Otago library. Soon I’ll put up some of my own hand-set letter-creations!
